History
The first arrivals in Kalk Bay were shipwrecked seamen and deserters. They built a lime kiln for processing seashells into lime for the Dutch East India Company and Kalk Bay is named after the caulking produced from this kiln.
Originally Kalk Bay had set swimming hours for men and for women. Men were permitted to swim in the sea from 6am till 8am and women were allowed in the water from 11am till 1pm. Luckily this rule no longer applies in Kalk Bay and all ages and genders enjoy the safe bathing provided by the tidal pools at various holiday accommodations throughout the sun-filled summer.
Most of Kalk Bay's history is based on fishing although the harbor was only built in 1918. The local fishermen would pull their boats high up onto the beach in the early days but after the railway line was built the beach became too narrow for the boats and many were lost in gales and storms.
Kalk Bay makes a fascinating holiday getaway with true village style accommodation. Culture Vultures and holidaying executives rub shoulders with the locals easily in this friendly, vibey little corner of paradise.
