Atmosphere
The most notable feature of Fish Hoek must be the golden, sandy beaches lapped by the clear waters of the Indian Ocean. Tanning and swimming feature as the major leisure activities in the Mediterranean-style summer season. Especially since this little town has one of the best swimming spots in South Africa.

Activities
If you want to go body-boarding or swimming then this is the place to do it. Fish Hoek boasts one of the safest beaches in South Africa. Kite-surfing and wind- surfing are also very popular when the wind picks up.
Nature
Whale watching is almost unavoidable in spring here as the whales come into the bay in huge numbers for their breeding season. It is quite possible to swim out to them from the beach or the rocks but don.t expect them to tolerate too much interference or rudeness from humans!
How can a seaside town be 'dry'?
In 1818 the original farm was granted on the condition that there was no public wine house. This, it was hoped, would keep the sailors from the navy base in Simon's Town from getting horribly drunk and causing trouble.
The tradition of a 'dry' town persists to the present day. There are no pubs or bottle stores in the entire town (any that do open somehow don't seem to last for long). You can still enjoy fabulous cape wines and beers here if you go to a good restaurant though!
